What Is the Entourage Effect?

The Effect

Most people familiar with the cannabis plant are aware of its two main compounds: tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD). Although these two compounds are the most famous, they are only two out of over 100 phytocannabinoids found in marijuana.

When you ingest these compounds, they affect your endocannabinoid system. This system is responsible for keeping the human body in a balanced state, or homeostasis. While there are products that consist only, or mainly, of CBD or THC, research shows that these compounds work best in conjunction with smaller organic compounds called terpenoids.

This relationship is the “entourage effect.” It’s the term for the synergistic and more therapeutic effect of consuming both compounds together, which creates an effect different from those you would get from either one separately.

The Research

According to research conducted on these compounds, taking phytocannabinoids along with terpenoids can produce more therapeutic benefits than any of the phytocannabinoids can produce alone. A few benefits that may result from taking these compounds together include a reduction in pain and anxiety and reduced inflammation.

Research in the British Journal of Pharmacology also suggests that together, phytocannabinoids and terpenes may also be beneficial when treating epilepsy, cancer, and fungal infections. Additionally, studies in both rats and humans show CBD can counteract unwanted effects resulting from THC use, such as anxiety, sedation, and hunger.

Effective Ratios of THC and CBD

From research, we understand that THC and CBD provide more benefits when together than they do when separated. However, it is important to note that the effects of marijuana use vary from person to person. As such, there is no single selected ratio of CBD and THC that works best for everyone.

Also, both of these compounds can elicit side effects, as well as potentially interact with medications that you are already taking. Talk to your healthcare provider if you are curious about how THC and CBD can benefit you. To find the best ratio for you, start with low dosages and different delivery methods like capsules, gummies, or topicals.

Benefits of CBD without THC

In recent years, CBD has become popular in and of itself as a beneficial compound for those who do not want to experience the psychoactive effects of THC. While the benefits may not be as significant as those achieved when combining THC and CBD, research suggests that users of CBD isolates may still experience some positive effects.

However, those who do not want to take THC should ensure that the CBD products they take are isolates and not full-spectrum products. These full-spectrum products do contain trace amounts of THC, and while it may not induce psychoactive effects, it might still show on a drug test.
